Island Dreamer

Author: Robin Jones Gunn

Dreams
I have read all of the Christy Miller books, and this one is my favorite. I laughed and cried and experienced the joy along with Christy. I feel as though I am I am there, because a lot of the things Christy went through, I have too. I have know read all of the Christy Miller books and I am on Don't You Wish, book 3, of the Sierra Jensen series. It will be "awesome" to see what happens to Todd, Christy, Doug, Sierra, and everyone else in the rest of the Sierra Jensen series and Christy's college years. Robin is such a great author, and I have become involved in her books. She has kept my interest, and got me closer to God.

Christy Miller Books
ok, so this book is mainly about christy who is having her 16th birthday and her parents surprise her to a trip to Hawwii with her best friend from her old home in wisconsin. As they get there Paula is flirting with Todd(Christy's "boyfriend") and Christy gets very jellous.a lot of other things happen too but u have 2 read it to see what else! I love Robin jones Gunn!I have read all the christy miller books, and I love them all! I have actrually cried in every single one because they make you seem like you are Christy! They made me give my heart 2 the lord and they actrually make me feel jellous or happy or sad.

Christy+Todd=Hmm?
This book was one of the best books I've ever read in my entire life! I am 12 years old, but I realize the concept of the story line and plot. Paula, no offense, reminds me of a "cheerleader" at my school. I'm going into middle school this fall, and I need a really good book to help keep me not so nervous, and believe me, these help alot. I recommend #1-5 in the Christy Miller series and #1, 8-10 in the Sierra Jensen series b/c that's all I've read so far!

The Annotated Anne of Green Gables
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (September, 1997)
Authors: Margaret Anne Doody, Mary E. Doody Jones, Wendy E. Barry, Lucy Maud Montgomery, and Mary D. Jones
Average review score:

Annotated Anne a must have for serious Anne collectors.
Everyone who is a serious Anne collector should definitely buy this book. It gives "Anne" a whole new perspective. Untill I read it I had no idea how many biblical and literary allusions L.M. Montgomery had used. I found out wonderful things about the book's background, such as who Montgomery modeled Anne after. I also got the chance to read some of the poems that Anne read or recited. The Annotated Anne is a worthwile investment for people who truly love Anne Shirley.

A must-have for any Anne fan!!
I just received this book for Christmas. I have been an "Anne" fan since I was 10 years old, and my love of all things L.M. Montgomery has only increased as I grew older. This new edition simply amazed me with all its informative footnotes. The best part for me was the inclusion at the back of the book of many of the poems and songs mentioned in the novel but not written out. Three cheers to the editors of this book! You've outdone yourselves!

This book is so complete! It is truly wonderful
This book is a must for all "Anne" fans. Includes a LM Montgomery biography, timeline, pictures from the original and other vintage "Anne" books, as well as references and explanations to the text itself. This even includes lyrics to the songs that are mentioned in the story, as well as the poetry Anne loves. Highly reccommended.

Isle of Palms: A Lowcountry Tale
Published in Hardcover by Berkley Pub Group (24 June, 2003)
Author: Dorothea Benton Frank
Average review score:

A Low Country Pleasure
Hello-she's baaaaaaaack- that low country lovin, livin, writin, Dorothea Benton Frank.

As with her previous 2 releases, ISLE OF PALMS, is also set in the author's beloved birthplace region and is a tribute to everything from it's salty marshes to it's eccentric inhabitants.

IOP is the author's best book yet.Frank provides equal parts drama, southern heritage and razor sharp one liners(reminiscent of Jersey girl, Evanovich).

The character of Anna Lutz Abbot is richly layered and supported by an ensemble cast that is flawed, but, loving and loyal.Anna's narrative is truly southern as well as sassy!

After reading all 3 of Frank's books, I have added a much needed, soul feeding, low country visit to my 'things to do before I die list.'

The 2 days spent reading this book was a long over due treat and well worth the wait since PLANTATION. My only regret is I didn't have my feet and backside firmly planted in the sandy beaches of South Carolina while reading it!

Miss Dottie Has Done It Again!
This is the third book and the third time I was held hostage by this author's words! I loved this book so much that I couldn't get a lick of work done until I finished it! The characters are deeply defined to the extent where I find I am missing them. I want to go to the Isle of Palms and have my hair done by Anna herself!

Great story! I only wish there were more Jims in this world!! :::sign:::

A wonderful story from the south
This one called out to me, and after reading the book, I know why. This was one of the best tales from the south I have ever read. I could not put the book down for a minute! The author truly brought me to the Isle of Plams, so much that I was looking at real estate down there myself! Bravo!

Anna is an incredible woman, and who wouldn't want to have Jim as an ex.

I am not a fan of books going to movies, but if this was the script, I would totally go see it!

Sanibel & Captiva: A Guide to the Islands
Published in Paperback by Coconut Press (08 January, 2002)
Authors: Julie Neal and Mike Neal
Average review score:

Fantastic!
We are really enjoying this book. There's so much information, and I love the photos. My husband and I have never been to Sanibel or Captiva (we're planning a trip later this year), but reading about the islands is relaxing and helps us escape our stressful jobs.

Answers a lot of questions
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book cover to cover and learned a lot of things I never knew even after 9 years of coming to the islands. The book provided answers to a lot of questions I've always had, such as... how Sanibel ever managed to keep fast food places off the islands! I showed it to my uncle and aunt who live on Sanibel and they thought it was wonderful too. Looking through my copy wasn't good enough -- they are going to pick up their own. When I returned home, I loaned the book to a co-worker who spends 3 weeks each year on Sanibel. He can't put the book down!

Fantastic guide to the Islands!
I love this book! My family is planning a second visit to Sanibel this summer, and we have gotten so much helpful information from this guide. The information and reviews are quite thorough...the pictures are awesome! We can't wait to go back to the Islands and try out some new sights, restaurants, and much more...Thank you, Neal Family!

Sparkle Island
Published in Paperback by Raven Tree Press, LLC. (27 June, 2000)
Authors: Ellen Rosewall, Amy Johnson, and Rob Mommaerts
Average review score:

Summer Sweetness
Sparkle Island is a wonderfully crafted, winsome revery of summer. The stories evoke summers from my childhood and gave a West Coast gal a taste of mid-west wonders. This read aloud book had me alternately howling (Bats, And a boat is....) and touched by the sweetness of shared family treasures. Our first read of this wonderful book of essays was on a boat. We joined Ellen Rosewall's family as we drifted through our own Sparkle Islands. Read this book aloud to everyone!

Can't get enough
Sparkle Island is a fantastic book which reminds us that in todays world of constantly shifting workplaces, homes, relationships or whatever, that the most important things cannot be bought for any price. Family life is the one true thing that needs to be cherished and I feel honored to be an observer into this author's family.

Not only are readers allowed a glimpse into an obviously warm and loving family, we are allowed to experience cottage life, with all of its charms. The sense of closeness they share and experience at the cottage almost convinces the reader Ja-Ma-Ca has magical qualities, which indeed it may have!

I have traveled around somewhat and still have many places I yearn to visit but now Walloon Lake is on my list. I long to collect a Petoskey stone, to eat planked whitefish, to go for a boat ride on the lake, and most of all to play petanque! Read this book and share it with others. You won't be disappointed, especially if you have a cottage or have summered at one.

Even Buckeyes Love Sparkle Island
For a died in the wool Buckeye, it was hard to imagine that a book about a place in that State up North that we all love to hate could be so warm and wonderful. Ellen Rosewall's special spirit and keen insights, however, clearly illuminate the joys of love, life and Wallon Lake. Being invited to share her obviously close, loving and spiritual family in such an intimate way, made Sparkle Island a truely heart warming experience!

Unearthing Atlantis: An Archaeological Odyssey
Published in Paperback by Vintage Books (February, 1993)
Authors: Charles R. Pellegrino and Arthur Charles Clarke
Average review score:

A shining example of Minoan Archaeology
After reading Pellegrino's book, I was convinced that the myth of Atlantis truly stemmed from Crete and Thera. As a reader, I was a believer... as an archaeologist, I disagreed with Pellegrino and Marinatos, the head of the Theran excavations, as to the relation of Thera to Atlantis. Nevertheless, Unearthing Atlantis is an entertaining piece of literature with its merits in storytelling and historical perspective. I recommend this book with the advice to read more on the same subject and compare theories..

Simply the Best
This is simply the best book I have read about archaeology since Gods, Graves, and Scholars. And it is the first book about the scientists who search for the past (actually written by one of them) that teaches us how to actually think in terms of deep time. Read this book and you will emerge from the "Mediterranean Genesis" chapter never viewing your own town, or anyplace on Earth, quite the same, ever again. The story of Atlantis itself, following the Frost/Marinatos hypothesis about the Minoan catastrophe of 1628 B.C. (a date finally fixed in stone by the Pellegrino synthesis), fitering down through history as the "kernel of truth" behind Plato's cautionary tale, is really the first book ever to approach this unsinkable subject from a purely archaeological and geological perspective, with no particular ax to grind. One learns why not even a small island, much less a continent, could have plunged through the ocean floor without leaving a significant and very easily seen geologic trace. Either Plato's Atlantis was based on an (only marginally) embellished and poorly understood account of history's largest known volcanic explosion (Thera/Santorini), or, according to Pellegrino, Atlantis did not exist at all. And to top all: the whole archaeological adventure is wrapped in some of the most elegant prose I have ever read.

A brilliant piece on what is most likely the real Atlantis.

No review can do justice to this fantastic book. Pellegrino not only gives a matter-of-fact explanation of how the Atlantis myth arose, a fascinating jump back in history to the beginning of time, and information on everything from Edith Russell Syndrome to Love Canal, he also shows the real-life workings of archaeology and the fascinating lives of Spyridon Marinatos and Christos Doumas.

I've read a few other books of his, all of them great. I hope to read many more.

Island: Survival
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 2001)
Author: Gordon Korman
Average review score:

The thrilling second book in the Island trilogy.
Ian, Luke, Charla, and Will have survived a terrible shipwreck and one week on the open seas with no food and scarce water. Now, they have landed on a tropical island in the middle of nowhere. Will is suffering from amnesia, and the kids don't even know if J.J. and Lyssa are still alive. The only human beings on this lonely island, they must make a fire, build a shelter, and gather food and water to sustain them, in addition to searching for Will, who has run off into the jungle. When a plane lands on the island, the kids hope to be rescued, but instead, they find themselves in the middle of some very dangerous and illegal dealings. Now the kids have a far bigger problem than simple survival. They have to hide all traces of their existence, or they won't have any hope at all of making it out of this alive. Gordon Korman continues his thrilling Island trilogy with book two, which picks up right where book one left off. I can't wait to read the third book and find out if the kids survive and make it off the island.

5-star Book(Island2survival)
Im here to tell you about a book i read. My book is called Island2survival. It is one book out of a series of three. This book ihas 138 pages. The author of this book is Gorden Korman. He also wirtes other three series books.
The genre of this book is realistic fiction and adventure. It is realistic fiction becauseit could happen in real life. It is adventure becausethe kids have to survive ont he island.
The setting of this story is: on an uncharted island over the summer. The plot is that six kids get shipwrecked on an uncharted island. They have to find food and build shelter to survive. Later on in the book they find out there are smugglers on the island that sell illegal animal parts. Whenever they hear the plane, they have to put out the fire and take all the food and supplies off the beach, and take them into the jungle where the smugglers cant see them.
There are some reasons i like this book. They are:The kids were trapped ont he island alone, they are on an island that has a big jungle, and because they have to be careful because there are smugglers on the island.
The reccomended age group i would think is nine years old and up,because it has some scenesthat younger kids wouldnt understand and it has one killing part in it.
This was a great book. Iwould reccomend you to read it.
GOOD-Bye

No Man Is an Island
Published in Paperback by Doubleday (January, 1900)
Author: Thomas Merton
Average review score:

Profound
"No Man Is An Island" can only be described as profound. There are many superb writings of spiritualiy, God and Christ. Thomas Merton's book is one that should not be passed up, it is absolutely profound for the interior solitude, the silence within, our silence where we find God's silence, who knows us and where we know Him. A book by a man of God for men of God, Merton goes far beyond religious organizational teachings and human thinking, to that of the spiritual life with God. I can only say, I have new found respect for the Catholic church, for Merton does not write in defense of her, but for God, men and charity, that go far beyond this life, existing now within us, and bring us to the real life we seek.

Merton distills the essence of a Christian life powerfully.
Merton's understanding of our human nature and his spiritual understanding of scripture combine to make a personally challenging and thoroughly understandable realization of how to become more spiritual, not religious. This is a "centering" book. It centers you in God revealed through Christ. This book has matured me as a Christian tremendously.

WOW!!!
In smooth-flowing prose that borders on poetic, Merton speaks of love, relations and reaching beyond oneself. Want to read an expose on the meaning of life that is both meaningful and practical to your life? Read this book!

Island of the Swans
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Fawcett Books (April, 1998)
Author: Ciji Ware
Average review score:

One book that will definitely grab the reader.
I read this book years ago and have always loved it. The book has enough historical detail to entertain anyone who loves history and romance. The characters are strong and mostly likable, their lives seem to be like everyone else's. The only thing I did not like was there was no closure. The reader is left with feeling that they have to find out what happened to Jane and Thomas.Ciji Ware certainly left this one open.

UNFORGETABLE LOVE STORY
I picked up this book never expecting it to be such an entriging love story. However, when I got into it, I could not put it down. I have never been interested in the British perspective on the American Revoltution, but the story of Jane Maxwell, Thomas Fraser and the Duke of Gordon was gripping. My fasination with this story is sorting out what was real and what was fiction. I have tried, rather successfully to research Alexander, the 4th Duke of Gordon. I was able to pinpoint several facts in history, but haven't been too successful with the characters. Does anyone know? The author details in the back of the book her exhaustive search for her Scottish linage to Jane Maxwell, but I was just curious how much was true. Great book, I loved it and will probably reread it again.

Rich in detail and accuracy
I am a latecomer to the novels of Ciji Ware, but very impressed with her ability to richly depict characters and places. I have personally visited the Island of the Swans, and thoroughly hiked in the area in which her book is set. Ms. Ware has a historian's love of accuracy, and her descriptions of Struy, Loch an Eilean, the River Spey, Culloden House (where I have sojourned many times), etc. are absolutely perfect. I was transported, once again to that delightful corner of the world.
